Food Chains

A food chain shows who eats whom. It starts with a plant — plants make their own food.

Next comes the herbivore — an animal that eats plants. A caterpillar eats leaves.

Then a carnivore eats the herbivore. A bird eats the caterpillar.

A top predator might eat the bird. The chain ends when nothing eats the top one.

When animals die, decomposers (worms, mushrooms) return nutrients to the soil. The chain starts again!
