Fractions with Pizza
Slice the pizza to learn halves, thirds, quarters, and more. Tap a slice to eat it — and see what fraction is left!
What is a fraction?
A fraction is a part of a whole. When you cut a pizza into 4 equal slices and eat 1 slice, you ate one quarter of the pizza. We write it as 1/4. The top number (1) is how many slices you have. The bottom number (4) is how many equal slices the whole pizza was cut into.
The bottom number is called the denominator (how many parts in total). The top number is the numerator (how many parts you have). If you cut a pizza into 8 slices and eat 3, you ate 3/8 of the pizza.
Slice the pizza
Choose how many slices to cut the pizza into. Then tap slices to "eat" them and watch the fraction change!
Equivalent fractions
Some fractions look different but mean the same amount! 1/2 is the same as 2/4, which is the same as 4/8. Try it: cut the pizza into 4, eat 2 slices — you ate 2/4. Now cut into 8, eat 4 slices — you ate 4/8. Same amount of pizza, different fractions!
These are called equivalent fractions. As long as you multiply or divide both the top and bottom by the same number, the fraction means the same amount.
Why this matters
Fractions are everywhere in real life: recipes (1/2 cup of flour), time (a quarter past three), money (half a dollar), music (a half note), and sports (half-time). Once you understand fractions, you can split anything fairly.
Chefs use fractions to scale recipes. Carpenters use fractions to measure wood. Musicians use fractions to read rhythm. Bankers use fractions to calculate interest. Fractions are the language of "part of something" — and we use them every day.
