Export Your Timeline First

Choose your platform for step-by-step instructions on getting your Timeline data from Google Maps.

  1. Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture (top right).
  2. Open Settings, then Personal content.
  3. Scroll to Export Timeline data and tap it.
  4. Confirm the export email, then open the link Google sends and download Timeline.json (newer phones) or Records.json.
  5. Save the file in the Files app, then return here and choose it.
  6. To keep this app on your iPhone, use Safari's Share menu and choose Add to Home Screen.
  1. Method 1 — in-app: open Google Maps → tap your profile picture → Settings → Personal content → Export Timeline data.
  2. Method 2 — on-device Timeline: open Google Maps → Your Timeline → use the export/share option if available on your device.
  3. Check your email for the export link from Google and download the archive.
  4. You get Timeline.json (newer), Records.json or location-history.json (older) — all three are supported here.
  5. The file may also arrive inside a .zip — you can drop the whole zip on this page without extracting.
  1. Visit takeout.google.com and sign in.
  2. Deselect all, then select only Maps (your places) → Location History.
  3. Choose Export once and your preferred archive size, then create the export.
  4. Download the archive when the email arrives.
  5. Open the zip and find Records.json (older Takeout: Location History → Timeline) or drop the whole .zip here directly.
  6. Note: for newer on-device Timeline data, export directly from the Google Maps app instead — Takeout no longer includes the same data for many users.

Is my location data uploaded?
No. Timeline Visualizer reads your file locally in your browser. Map tiles are fetched from the map provider, which may receive coordinates for areas shown in your journey. With "Follow roads" enabled, simplified route points are also sent to the free OSRM routing service to snap the line to real roads — choose Route path → "Straight lines" to avoid that. Your raw file never leaves your device.
Which file formats are supported?
Timeline.json (new iOS/Android export), Records.json (classic Takeout), location-history.json (older Android), and Takeout .zip archives containing any of them. The format is detected automatically.
Which browsers can create the video?
Recent Chrome or Edge on desktop and Android record MP4 directly. Safari and Firefox typically save WebM instead — both play everywhere and can be converted if needed. Preview animation works in every modern browser.
Does Google Takeout still work for Timeline?
For newer on-device Timeline data, export directly from Google Maps on your phone. Takeout no longer includes the same data for many users — see the guide above.
Is this an official Google product?
No. This tool is an unofficial third-party utility and is not affiliated with Google. Your data stays with you.
How much does the video export cost?
